Phobias

What is a phobia?

Phobias are intense, irrational fears that cause distress and/or limit your functioning in at least one major area of your life (e.g., relationships, work, daily living). The cause of a phobia can differ between individuals and may be the result of a negative experience. For example, some individuals report an intense fear of dogs from childhood, while others note that their phobia started after being bit by a dog. In both cases, this fear can get to the point where it is interfering with one’s life.

Specific phobias can include almost anything, although some things are more likely to cause a phobia than others. Some of the most common phobias include driving, flying, medical procedures, public speaking, certain animals, insects, and weather events. Research shows that phobias can arise for any reason and are then maintained by avoidance of the feared stimuli (e.g., no longer driving, avoiding outdoor areas due to fear of an insect).

How are phobias treated?

Fortunately, there are highly effective treatments for phobias. Research shows that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in combination with exposure therapy is the most effective form of treatment for phobias. Exposure therapy is a collaborative process between the client and the therapist. After a detailed assessment, specific techniques are introduced in order to interrupt different parts of the avoidance cycle. It is essential that treatment move at the client’s own pace.

At times, phobias can be the result of a traumatic event and may mimic the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). A competent therapist will determine if this is the case during the initial assessment and modify treatment to include trauma treatment techniques if needed.

My approach

Working with clients on overcoming phobias is one of the most rewarding aspects of my practice. Not only are changes happening in real time, but treatment for most phobias is relatively brief, with clients meeting their goals much earlier than they had expected. For many clients, a phobia has held them back for years, or even decades, and can be resolved in a matter of weeks.

The process of treating a phobia also requires a level of creativity and flexibility for each client. I enjoy creating an individualized plan with each client, hearing about what they’d like to accomplish, and then watch them meet those goals.

In addition to working with individuals with phobias, a portion of my practice also includes working with parents of children with phobias. Watching your child struggle with an intense fear can be excruciating as a parent and even the best intentions can make a phobias worse over time. Consulting with a psychologist helps parents understand what they can do to break the fear cycle and help their child overcome it.
